Those Who Were There — The Holocaust

A long-term photographic project exploring the lesser-known and often overlooked histories of the Holocaust, including The Screaming Silence and Kantor | Phillips.

Those Who Were There is a long-term photographic project exploring the lesser-known and often overlooked histories of the Holocaust.

The project focuses on individual stories and places that can be absent from the wider historical narrative. These are stories of immense tragedy, but also of human resilience, courage, compassion and love - the qualities that endured despite unimaginable circumstances.

I firmly believe that the history of the Holocaust, particularly in the West, is still not understood as deeply or as widely as it should be. Many stories remain unfamiliar, overlooked or rarely spoken about. Through this body of work, I want to explore those histories and give greater space to the people and places behind them.

The project is being developed as a series of individual collections, each examining a different region and its experience during one of humanity's darkest periods.

These collections include:

Belarus · Ukraine · Poland · Germany · Czech Republic · Greece · Hungary · North Africa

Together, Those Who Were There seeks to look beyond the commonly told history and towards the people who lived through it - remembering not only what happened to them, but who they were.
