Working with Charmonix 45H-1
Since moving from digital to film the transitions has at times been a little scarey, fun and frustrating. I started with a bog standard large format 4 by 5 that I shall not name, the movements were not smooth, screws would fall out during transport, in general the build quality was not up to it.
I was searching the market for something more robust and would cut my messing around in the field. I was advised on the Charmonix brand as one that would be right up my street and in my mind very good value for money for what you were getting.
I looked at the 45N-1 but decided to spend the additional £450 and purchase the 45H-1. It offered more movements and it made sense to buy the upgrade strait away instead of purchasing later on.
The major advantage of the H series is its fast set-up and close-down time because the lens can stay on the camera when the camera is in the bag, backpack, or case.
The rear standard on the 45H-1 can be removed and exchanged for other format backs such as 5 by 7inches or 6x17cm. The movements a beautifully smooth and everything locks very easily. The body is made from metal and wood finished in teak or cherry.
Taking in to account that I have really only been taking images on large format for 18 months I have enjoyed using this lovely work of art. It has been so beneficial to the way I now work and I am extremely pleased I decided to make the transition from digital to film.
Now all I need to do is expose the film correctly.
